Some new reviews

A couple of new snippet reviews around the ridges:

Over on Amazon, reader Ladi8ug loved The Aware, saying: This was a fantastic read! Lots of twists and turns and just a few easy to see plots to make you feel like you know what’s going on, then you are back to wondering what will happen next. I rarely give 5 stars, but this book deserved it.

havenstar6highqualityAnd still on Glenda Larke, Goodreads reviewer Siavahda wrote a wonderfully detailed review of Havenstar which ends with: …this has gone straight onto my favourites shelf, and is going to get recced to everyone I know.

At Goodreads, reader Liz gave Cranky Ladies of History five stars and said: Thoroughly enjoyed it! Many of the stories had me looking for more information on these fascinating women. A great introduction to women in history.

We missed this lovely review of Pratchett’s Women on Amazon, courtesy of reader Syntia, when it written earlier this year: …not afraid to point out and analyze glaring problems with portrayal of female characters…

And this great line from a review of Guardian by Jo Anderton on Goodreads: …included many really visceral moments that I loved…

As always, thank you to all the wonderful readers who take the time to rate and review our books on Amazon, Goodreads and other forums – we appreciate each and every one!

The long and the short: some reviews!

9780992553456While we were in Sydney over the weekend, attending the NSW Writers Centre’s Speculative Fiction Festival (see my Storify here), the Future Fire’s comprehensive review of Cranky Ladies of History hit the internet. Reviewer Valerie Vitale had some thoughtful comments, including: “…a collection of stories definitely worth reading … informative and very engaging on an emotional level. It is a fascinating and inspiring parade of great women…

Our most recent re-release, Glenda Larke’s Havenstar has also been getting some new love, with reviewers on Amazon saying things like: “Larke has created a fantastic yet thoroughly credible world…” and “I cannot recommend this book too highly.”

And I just came across this snappy review for Insert Title Here via Amazon, in which the reviewer calls the book: “literate and entertaining”

The short ones are appreciated too, thank you readers!

New book: HAVENSTAR by Glenda Larke

havenstar6highqualityWe’re very excited to announce a new book to our ebook reprint range, Havenstar by the always fabulous Glenda Larke! Havenstar was Glenda’s first published book, and we’re extremely proud to be able to bring it to you for KindleHavenstar joins our range of Glenda Larke ebooks, and trust me, if you’ve never had the opportunity to read this early Larke, you NEED to – Glenda’s writing is amazing, and Havenstar is just as wonderful as her Isles of Glory trilogy and other later work.

Want to know more? Here’s the blurb:

The Eight Stabilities are islands of order surrounded by lethal chaos—and the order is being swallowed by the unstable. The religious leaders of Chantry try to maintain the Stabilities by ordering the necessity of a once in a lifetime pilgrimage across the chaos. And in that ever-changing world, the most important person is a mapmaker who can make a chart of secure pilgrimage routes…

Keris Kaylen is a mapmaker’s daughter. When her father is murdered and a mountain disappears, Keris is betrayed by her brother. Forced to flee into the Unstable, she finds her safety is in the hands of a man bonded to the Lord Carasma, the Unmaker…and her ordered life is turned upside-down. Her survival will depend on a map and a place called Havenstar—but she can’t reproduce the map, and Havenstar may not even exist…

FREE for a limited time – Glenda Larke’s “The Aware”

Aware CoverGlenda Larke is not a cranky lady. Well, she IS, in the way we define our Cranky Ladies, because she’s done some incredible things so far in her life, but in person she is lovely (not cranky!) and an amazingly talented author. After having her first novel published 15 years ago, Glenda continues to write fantastic books that keep on getting better, and when you know how good her early works were, the anticipation for each new one grows!

Today is the release day for Glenda’s newest book, The Lascar’s Dagger, the first of her new Forsaken Lands series, and I can’t wait to read it. To celebrate the new book, we have made the first book of Glenda’s first trilogy FREE, for a limited time. From now until the end of March, you can get The Aware (book 1 of the Isles of Glory) free on most platforms – currently Amazon, Kobo, iTunes and Smashwords have the discount applied, while Wizard’s Tower Books has a fantastic bundle deal with all three Isles of Glory novels for the price of two.

Remember, it’s only for two weeks, so get in quick to get your copy! And if you love Glenda’s books, or you simply love sweeping epic fantasy with well-realised characters and action-packed plot, check out The Lascar’s Dagger too – I’ll bet it’s another piece of Larke brilliance.

The Isles of Glory by Glenda Larke

Tainted CoverThis morning I pressed “publish” on the final book of Glenda Larke’s Isles of Glory trilogy, The Tainted. FableCroft has been privileged to publish the ebook editions of this fantastic series over the past few months, and I have been personally delighted to revisit them. It has been a decade since the paperbacks were first released (via Voyager in Australia and Ace in the US, with later German editions as well), and this is the first time English ebook editions have been available.

If you enjoy epic fantasy with an intelligent and action-filled plot, detailed and logical world-building, and characters you will weep for, fall in love with or loathe with justified passion, you need to read Glenda Larke’s books. This genre has been my first love, my go-to comfort read, my preferred escape from reality for over 20 years, and Glenda’s novels are some of the best examples of the form I’ve come across. This trilogy is as good (or better!) than most fantasy being published today, and the themes explored are just as relevant as ever.

The great thing is, you don’t have to just take MY word for it – over the years so many people have said wonderful things about the books. We list some on the Isles of Glory page here on the FableCroft site, but check out Goodreads and the paperback editions on Amazon for even more.

Here at FableCroft, I only publish stories I love, and I love these books. I think you will too!

The books of the Isles of Glory trilogy, The Aware, Gilfeather and The Tainted, are (or will soon be) available for just US$3.99 each from Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords (and affiliates, including iTunes and Sony Bookstore), Wizard’s Tower Books and Weightless Books. Choose your preferred format and supplier!

We are in the final throes of production for the first ever ebook of Glenda Larke’s excellent Gilfeather, book two of the Isles of Glory series.

The unassuming Sky Plains healer Gilfeather is drawn into the adventure of a lifetime, as he joins a warrior and a sorceress on a quest to overcome a ruthless dunmagicker whose lust for dark power places the entirety of the Glory Isles in danger.

Book one of the series, The Aware, is already available at your favourite e-tailer for around $3.99.

New book! The Aware by Glenda Larke

Aware CoverThe first of Glenda Larke’s Isles of Glory trilogy, The Aware, is now available in ebook from FableCroft. From the blurb:

Imagine what it’s like to be born citizenless in a world where citizenship is everything.

Imagine what it’s like to be abandoned by the parents you can’t remember before you are two years old, in a city that despises you for being a halfbreed.

Imagine what it is like to be able to see magic when others can’t.

Imagine what it’s like to live in the Glory Isles at a time when your archipelago is about to be discovered by another civilization from half a world away.

Changes are in the wind.

This is the world of The Aware.

***

One of my favourite things about this book is that the narrator, Blaze, is not the typical character we so often see in fantasy. You know that idea of a “strong female character” we often hear about but rarely actually see in action? To me, Blaze is the type of creation that phrase actually describes! Put her alongside a supporting cast who you will get to know and still want more, and some of the best world-building in modern fantasy, and The Aware is the start of an excellent reading journey.

***

“Rich world building will capture the reader’s interest. With a forceful heroine who is mature and experienced, Larke crafts a fantastic tale that moves beyond a typical coming-of-age fantasy. Fans of Lois McMaster Bujold and Mercedes Lackey’s strong heroines will relish Blaze’s adventures.” –Romantic Times, USA.
