The award-winning Starship Sofa podcast have worked their podcasty magic on another story from One Small Step – this time, Suzanne J Willis’ story “Number 73 Glad Avenue” has hit the airwaves – take a listen!

Marianne de Pierres’ novel Peacemaker is going to be made into an interactive game! The origins of the Peacemaker series are in the short story “Virgin Jackson”, which was reprinted in FableCroft’s Australis Imaginarium anthology in 2010!

The voting for NAFF (National Australian Fan Fund) closes TODAY, and I’m running, with my fan hat on! The fund supports an Australian fan to attend the National Science Fiction and Fantasy convention in Australia (this year that’s Continuum), and I’m really looking forward to being able to attend in that capacity, should I be successful! I can hardly ever get to panels when I go to cons, and being there as NAFF delegate would mean I can do the full convention experience — I’ve also got lots of fun ideas for fundraising for NAFF (part of the delegate’s responsibility), which I’m looking forward to. You can find more information here, and once you’ve read about each candidate, if you’ve got $5 to spare for a vote, it would be appreciated (you don’t have to vote for me — the other candidate is also very worthy, or you can vote to hold over funds for the following year).

Speaking of Natcon, if you are a member of Continuum, or were a member of Conflux last year, you have Ditmar Awards voting rights! It’s a great ballot, so please exercise your democratic rights 🙂 We have posted some free fiction and discounts on our nominated books and stories, to help you make an informed choice 🙂

Congratulations Shaun Tan!

As most everyone knows by now, the wonderful Shaun Tan, who did the gorgeous cover art for Australis Imaginarium, won an Oscar for the short film The Lost Thing, based on his book by the same name. This is such a fantastic achievement, for so many reasons, not the least being that Shaun is from Perth, Australia, and got his start in Australian small press. He’s also a genuinely lovely guy and I feel privileged to have his art grace one of my book covers.

FableCroft at Aussiecon 4

From Wednesday September 1 to Monday September 6, I was in Melbourne for the fourth Australian Worldcon, Aussiecon 4. This was a great chance to meet authors and people in spec fic from all over the world, including long-time online friends and many others. FableCroft had a strong presence in the Dealer Room (thanks to Alisa over at Twelfth Planet Press who permitted us space on her beautifully presented table, as well as access to her EFTPOS machine!) and I got the chance to meet and catch up with almost a full quotient of FableCroft authors! Both Worlds Next Door and Australis Imaginarium sold well and it was lots of fun to talk to people about them and show them off.

Some highlights:

* Giving Shaun Tan his contributor copy of Australis Imaginarium and having him admire it very much! Well done Amanda Rainey for a cover design that really did his artwork justice.

* Getting authors to sign their stories in a special copy of Worlds Next Door.

* Hearing Dirk Flinthart recount how he read his Worlds Next Door story (“The Best Dog in the World”) to a very appreciative audience, only to end up in tears himself – twice! (A number of other people also said they may have choked up when reading it themselves – it’s a good story 🙂 )

* Being on a panel about writing the difference in Australian SF with Peter M Ball and Narrelle Harris and being able to recommend fantastic Australian short and long fiction to a mostly international audience.

It was such a busy but fabulous five days, and one I’m so glad I got to – hope to make it to another Worldcon one year! For now though, I’ll look forward to Swancon36/Natcon50 in Perth at Easter, the Aurealis Awards in Sydney sometime next year, and hopefully Conflux in Canberra late 2011!

Australis Imaginarium revealed!

The very awesome Amanda Rainey has worked her magic once again, this time with artwork by illustrious Shaun Tan, creating the cover for Australis Imaginarium. It is beautiful and I love it.

Australis Imaginarium will go to print tomorrow, and, interestingly, because we’re using a different printer this time, will probably arrive the same week as Worlds Next Door! Will post a preorder special real soon!

To celebrate Australis Imaginarium being (almost) ready to go to print, we’re giving away another book!
